The Happy Pear
Vegan? Cooking for a vegan? Well, it’s not likely you’re having a dinner party any time soon, or maybe you are? Over here, well, I just fancied a change. We tried the vegan thing last year. It lasted a mere month. Not bad going you say. Well, maybe strictly speaking a week. A cup of tea without milk in the morning is a bad way to start the day. Try oat milk in it and you’re kidding yourself if that’s ok.
Nevertheless, it’s good to eat less meat and isn’t it all the rage to be more plant based in our lifestyles. So an evening reading Amazon reviews on pb cookbooks lead me to the Happy Pear.
Verdict
I must confess, I’ve not cooked from it yet, this being my lifelong habit of having shelves full of cookbooks. I peruse, I turn pages, I bookmark with multi-coloured post-its that stick out of the top. I read with interest, I especially like cookbooks that have stories, narratives about the story of a dish, I like learning more about whose food I’m cooking. Maybe I just need to get out more? I make shopping lists. And then I cook the same old things I always cook. Or leave it to The Boss to do the cooking because that’s always a way to get a better meal than I can ever produce.
That said there are some things in here that I think I will try. I particularly like the way the book is set out. It breaks down the nutritional content of the recipe, explains the components of the dish i.e. starch, crust, fat, cooked veg etc. The recipe is laid out rather interestingly and takes a few reads to get your head around but actually is really clever. It gives you 3 recipes on one page and lists how much of each component required i.e. for a basic burger, high protein burger or 15 minute burger. Then the instructions, rather than referring back to the description of each food item, will just say – prepare the cooked veg, rinse the beans, add the starch.
I don’t think I’m describing it very well alas, if pb is your thing, you should try it out. Maybe we should have a cook along? I will give it a go. I shall pop the pictures up on our Instagram feed and share the results. The pictures are beautiful, colourful and appealing. Watch this space for the results. Let us know if you’ve got any good cook books you’d recommend. We’re always looking for new additions.
